They’re braver than you or I. Yes, yes, Formula 1 may have the most technologically advanced cars but they don’t have to thread their fragile machines along a narrow winding mountain road between trees and rocks.

Couldn’t be more evocative really, to any automotive enthusiast worth his/her salt, their mind will instantly conjour up images of massively be-winged and vented Audi Quattros, Lancia 037s and Deltas, Peugeot 205 T16s and Ford RS200s tearing through European countryside, spitting gravel and flame in equal measure. They were ultimately too fast and too crude for their time and, to be realistic, outlawing them was the only real option. But that doesn’t mean that they will be forgotten. A Toyota Celica competing in a round of the European rally championship in the mid 70s. I’m not an expert on Celicas but this looks like a 1970-75 model, probably packing a 2TG. This tarmac rally spec Celica is a pretty good looking for a rally car with the chin spoiler, flared arches and ducktail rear spoiler. I somewhat doubt though that even in it’s heyday that the 2TG would have been able to muster up enough grunt to trouble those wide rear tyres.
