R5 Turbo

You just can’t beat the R5 Turbo. The original mental hot hatch, mid engined rear wheel drive 1397cc turbo. The road version of these pumped out 160hp and weighed less than 1000kgs. Even pretty good for today, crazy quick for 1980.

They earned a somewhat exaggerated reputation for being ready to bite a driver that took too many liberties with them, being very short in wheelbase and mid engined but in actuality the wide rear tyres gave massive levels of grip and the R5 Turbo was very fast from point to point.

And if that wasn’t enough for you, the R5 Maxi Turbo (pictured) cranked out 350hp. It might have been a little laggy though, running big boost to get 350hp from 1.4l đŸ˜€

It was the 80s though, so turbo lag was just letting you know that big performance was on the way (eventually)
